The Official Top 40 biggest songs of 2017 so far
At the halfway point of 2017, Official Charts reveals the Top 40 biggest tracks of the year so far.
2017 in music is shaping up to be Ed Sheeran’s year as he leads the way with the Top 2 Official biggest songs of 2017 so far.
At the halfway point of 2017, Shape Of You – one of Ed's double single release ahead of his third album ÷ back in January - leads the way with a massive 2.6 million shifted across all formats.
72% of that figure is streaming equivalent sales (184 million plays), while 28% is digital downloads (717,000), making Shape Of You both the biggest selling song of 2017 so far and sets a new record for the UK’s most streamed song of all time, overtaking Drake’s One Dance.
The second of Ed’s ÷ releases, Castle On The Hill, is the second biggest song of the year to date, with 1.5 million equivalent units sold, made up of 455,000 downloads and 105m streams.
Two more songs by Ed appear in the YTD Top 40 off the back of his hugely successful ÷ album. Galway Girl places fourth with just over one million combined sales, while future single Perfect is 29th, on just under half a million equivalent units.

Summer smash Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee heads up the rest of the singles pack behind Ed. A remix of the track featuring Justin Bieber saw the Spanish hit take off in the UK back in May, kicking off a mult-week residency at Number 1. The song has so far amassed 1.2 million combined sales.
Rag’n’Bone Man’s hugely successful breakthrough single Human racks up a further 907,000 equivalent units this year (a total of 1.2m across all formats since its release in December 2016), while follow-up Skin appears at 26 on just over half a million units.
Elsewhere, Clean Bandit’s run of success continues well into 2017 – Symphony ft. Zara Larsson is currently the seventh biggest song of the year (820,000). The track became the group’s third Number 1 single back in May.
Following a strong run of form delivering hit after hit, US production duo The Chainsmokers enjoy two entries in the list. Something Just Like This (with Coldplay) is at 8 (737,000), followed by Paris at 12 (626,000).
British acts dominate the Top 10 of the YTD list, with seven being British-born, eight if you include Coldplay’s joint headline billing on Something Just Like This with The Chainsmokers. A total of 17 UK acts feature in the Top 40.
Further down, Bruno Mars’ That’s What I Like is at 21 despite its Number 12 peak on the Official Singles Chart, placing ahead of big tracks such as Katy Perry’s Chained To The Rhythm (23) and Zayn & Taylor Swift’s I Don’t Wanna Live Forever (28).
Grime is also represented on the rundown with Stormzy’s Top 10 hit Big For Your Boots at Number 32, closely followed by Did You See by rising star J Hus at 34.
Newcomer Dua Lipa also scores multiple entries with her Martin Garrix collaboration Scared To Be Lonely (22) and Be The One (31), while Canadian star The Weeknd features twice with his Daft Punk collaborations I Feel It Coming (36) and Starboy (38).
