United got off to the perfect start as Antonio Valencia smashed the ball into the back of the net from just outside the box in the fourth minute.

Valencia didn’t even need a touch to control the ball before blasting it home on the volley after receiving the pass from Nemanja Matić.

United were comfortable for most of the first half. However, 20 minutes in, Rooney reminded the Old Trafford crowd what he was capable of, fizzing a shot wide of the post.

Five minutes later, Lukaku had a chance to score as he received a pass from Juan Mata and fended off defenders to shoot. However, like Rooney, he failed to hit the target against his old club.

Everton’s defence withstood United’s pressure for the rest of the half and the Toffees went into the break just 1-0 down.

The visitors then got the second half off to a bright start as Rooney forced an early save from David de Gea.

15 minutes later, the Spanish goalkeeper was forced into action again, but had little trouble keeping out a tame shot from Gylfi Sigurdsson.

In the 63rd minute, Ashley Williams was given a yellow card for pushing Mata over just outside Everton’s box. From the resulting free-kick, Mata’s shot clattered Jordan Pickford’s right post.

In the 78th minute, Jesse Lingard went down under a challenge from Ashley Williams in the box and appealed for a penalty. Referee André Marriner was unmoved.

Marriner was not as lenient towards Eric Bailly four minutes later as he saw yellow for a foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Directly afterwards, Ronald Koeman brought Rooney off for Kevin Mirallas. The Manchester United legend came off to a rousing reception from the home supporters.

With seven minutes left to play, Lukaku set Henrikh Mkhitaryan up right in front of goal and the former Borussia Dortmund player made no mistake, stroking it around Pickford.

Lukaku grabbed a goal of his own six minutes later, capitalising on a lovely flick from Lingard and celebrating wildly.

Anthony Martial put the icing on the cherry, scoring a stoppage time penalty after a Morgan Schneiderlin handball.

United now sit level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table and have moved three clear of third-placed Chelsea.
