This is how the ‘Oyinbo Wall’ term was coined
Leon Balogun and William Troost-Ekong have formed a partnership in the Super Eagles central defence which has become very exciting for Nigerians.
The
partnership which is now called the ‘Oyinbo Wall’ was instrumental in
the Super Eagles unbeaten games in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Balogun explained that the name ‘Oyinbo Wall’ was coined by him and Ekong after the game in Yaounde where the Super Eagles beat Cameroon 4-0 in Uyo on September 1 before battling to a 1-1 draw away in Yaounde September 4.
The
Mainz defender revealed that they coined the name because Nigerians
kept calling them ‘Oyinbo’ a term used to describe people with light
skin.
“Nigerians kept calling us Oyinbo so we called our partnership Oyinbo Wall,” Balogun told Pulse Sports at the mix zone of the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, Yaounde after the Super Eagles game against Cameroon.
“We hope the partnership can be better and go on for a long time.” He said.
The Leon Balogun was born in Germany to a Nigerian father and
German mother while Troost-Ekong was born in the Netherlands to a
Nigerian father and Dutch mother.
